Health News on Smoking

Here are some interesting new ways to kick that dirty habit:

Short bursts of activity: A new review in the journal Addiction says a quick dose of exercise — as little as 30 minutes of brisk walking or stretching, for instance –quells cravings.

Internet groups: Groups like Quitnet can offer round-the-clock encouragement from fellow quitters and counselors. This kind of support can double your success, studies say.

Innovative medication: Chantix, the newest stop-smoking drug, short-circuits nicotine’s ability to activate the pleasure centers in the brain, so lighting up is less enjoyable. According to the National Cancer Institute, more stop-smoking drugs (and possibly even a vaccine that makes nicotine unappealing) could hit the market within five years.

A new way to use the patch: A study in Nicotine and Tobacco Research suggests that smokers who start the patch two weeks before they quit may double their success rate. (Talk to your doctor, because this trick risks exposing your body to a dangerous amount of nicotine if you smoke a lot while wearing the patch.)

Smoking ‘will’ kill ya, so give these methods a try.

Healthy Skin is Beautiful Skin

A co-worker at my office recently went under the knife for a painful plastic surgeries. She was out of work for two weeks and when she returned to her desk the next Monday, she looked like death warmed over. She was in tremendous pain. Her face was bright red, her nose swollen to two times its regular size, the staples in her scalp could be seen upon closer examination, and the pain medication that she was on rendered her almost incoherent. The looks themselves were enough to break me of any desire to submit my body to that kind of torture. The sad thing was, she is only 50 years old and this was her third facial plastic surgery. This made me think that her desires to be young were more addictive than rational.

We see the same thing with dieters. Being a healthy weight is desirable but some go to extremes to obtain what they view as the perfect weight. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are examples. But these are not healthy. The key to good health and weightloss is excercise and lots of fruits and vegetables. Akavar Weight Loss Pills work great without side effects but if possible healthy eating and excercise should be tried first. Likewise there are healthy means to youthful appearance and there are very unhealthy procedures that we should stay away from.

Two Tips To Remember In Choosing A Healthy Way To Youthful Beauty

Do what feels right.

Painful procedures (like micro-derm abrasion) don’t feel good. And they are not good for you. The natural way to exfoliate dead skin is using natural exfoliator such as sea sand. There are many cosmetic exfoliators with these natural exfoliators as their main ingredients.

Work with your skin.

Don’t try to change your skin and stay away from products that claim to. Using a product such as Amatokin that works with your skin to enhance its natural abilities is a good alternative. If you have oily skin, choose products that work with oily skin (not those that eliminate it). Treat your skin with care and respect and it will serve you well for “ages” to come.

I have mentioned Amatokin because it has shown to be a very good eliminator of wrinkles. Yet it does so without painful procedures. Women should choose their way to beauty like they choose their lifestyle and their weight loss course. They should choose, with care, those products which are nourishing and beneficial for their body in the long run. Healthy skin is beautiful skin.

Another skin problem that can quickly get out of control is Vitiligo, this is a generalized disease with localized manifestations. What your eyes see is white spots on your skin but the basic abnormality is a generalized derangement of immune system.   Management of this disease focuses on cosmetic improvement of the white patches, either by re-pigmentation or camouflage if necessary.

Health News Tidbits

A look at health news headlines from around the world:

-Research from the University of Texas found large waist measurements, relative to hip size, were linked to early signs of heart disease.  This confirms other research that waist size, rather than overall body weight, is a key indicator of heart disease. The study of 2,744 people suggests that a waist size of 32ins (81cm) for a woman and 37ins (94cm) for a man represents a “significant” raised risk.  Time for me to cut back on the beer.

-The Department of Health (DoH) advises people not to drink more than five single espressos - roughly seven instant coffees - a day, although individuals vary in their sensitivity and reactions.  The highest natural caffeine content is found in filter coffee, a mug of which contains about 120mg of caffeine. Instant coffee contains roughly 75mg and espresso 107mg.

-Carrying too much weight while pregnant increases the risk of complications for mother and baby, including birth defects, labor and delivery problems, fetal death and delivery of large babies, according to the March of Dimes. A revision is long overdue, said Dr. Raul Artal of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “The reality is for too long we are telling pregnant women to take it easy during pregnancy, be confined and to eat for two,” he said. “This has been one factor in causing the epidemic of overweight and obesity that we see in our country.”

Fungus and Chronic Sinus Infections

Filed under: Health Information — jayg123 at 12:21 pm on Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Chronic sinus infections affect millions of people all over the world. A chronic sinus infection can seriously affect your quality of life.

Some common symptoms of sinus infection include facial pains in the location of the sinus cavities, headache, cough, bad breath, post nasal drip and many others.

The long standing way to treat sinus infections has been to prescribe antibiotics. Doctors have always assumed that chronic sinus infection was caused by bacteria.

In 1999, the Mayo Clinic did a study and they found that almost all cases of chronic sinus infections were not caused by bacteria, but by fungus.

So if you suffer from chronic sinus infections, make sure to see your doctor and get a proper diagnosis of what is actually causing your sinus problems.

Maximizing Your Fertility in the Least Amount Of Time

Getting pregnant can be the one of the most exciting times in a couple?s life. From conception to birth, pregnancy is usually a happy and joyful journey.

But can the journey be fun if you are having difficulties conceiving? It is fraught with complications and worries, right? If you and your partner are struggling with fertility issues, you may want to look into ways to get pregnant as quickly and easy as possible.

What you are about to learn is… How to increase your odds of hitting the reproductive jackpot?

ODDS FOR CONCEPTION AND FERTILITY POINTERS

When you’re trying to conceive, you have to promote a successful pregnancy by maximizing fertility. How? Consider these simple tips to maximize your fertility and to increase your chances of conceiving quickly.

Have sex regularly. If you consistently have sex two or three times a week, you’re almost certain to hit a fertile period at some point. There’s no such thing as too much sex for healthy couples who want to conceive. BUT, don’t get too much of a good thing during your fertile period can be physically and mentally draining and doesn’t do much to increase your odds of conceiving.

Make love on the right days. Have sex once a day near the time of ovulation. Daily intercourse during the days leading up to ovulation may increase the odds of conception. Although this can cause a slight drop of sperm from your partner, the reduction does not affect healthy men. Remember, you’re at your most fertile during the five days leading up to and the 12 hours following ovulation. If you miss this window of opportunity, it’s game over!!! This may sound like a no-brainer, but mistimed baby making can wreak your plans to conceive.

Make healthy lifestyle choices. Maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat healthfully and keep stress under control. The same good habits will serve you and your baby well during pregnancy. You can consider preconception planning if you or your partner have any health issues. Your doctor can assess your overall health and help you identify lifestyle changes that may improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy.

Take your vitamins. Folic acid (vitamin B-9) plays an essential role in a baby’s development. Taking a prenatal vitamin or folic acid supplement beginning at least one month before conception through the first trimester of pregnancy can reduce the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects by up to 70 percent

Create a sperm-friendly vaginal environment. Avoid vaginal sprays, scented tampons and artificial lubricants, all of which may interfere with your baby making plans.

PROPERLY TIMING INTERCOURSE TO ACHIEVE PREGNANCY
What the Physician advices regarding the optimal timing of intercourse to achieve pregnancy is to prospectively identify the full window of fertility. This may lead to higher rates of conception. With the proper information you can reduce unnecessary intervention and cost.

How? Getting the proper timing to intercourse is knowing the cycle. The more you know about your menstrual cycle, the easier it will be for you to pinpoint your most fertile days. You may find it useful to start keeping a menstrual calendar, noting the day on which your period starts, the day when it ends, any pre-ovulatory symptoms and to learn how to monitor your three key fertility signals:

1) The quantity and quality of your cervical mucus (you’re most fertile when your mucus is abundant and egg white in texture),
2) The position and feel of your cervix (it’s located high in the vagina and is soft and fleshy during your most fertile days)
3) Fluctuations in your basal body temperature (your temperature will jump once ovulation has occurred).

NATURAL FERTILITY BOOSTING POSITIONS

Sexual Positions.
In order to become pregnant, your partner must deposit his sperm as close as possible to your cervix. Certain positions will allow this to happen more easily. Avoid having sex while standing, sitting, or with you on top, as this can cause semen to leak out of your body. Instead, try the missionary position, which allows for deeper penetration. Rear entry intercourse is also effective, as it allows your partner to deposit semen closer to your cervix.

Don’t hop out of bed right away. While it’s not necessary to elevate your bottom with pillows or go to other extreme measures to give the sperm a head start, it’s a good idea to remain in a horizontal position for at least five minutes after you’ve finished making love. After all, gravity is a pretty formidable adversary for sperm.

NATURAL APPROACHES TO REGULATING OVULATION AND OTHER NATURAL METHODS OF PROMOTING FERTILITY

Eating Right. Eating right plays an important role in your body?s fertility. A balanced diet helps to regulate hormones and nourish your reproductive system. A good diet also helps you to maintain a healthy weight, which can greatly impact fertility. Women who are underweight or overweight may have a harder time becoming pregnant because body fat levels impact the production of sex hormones.

Exercise. Moderate exercise can also be a good natural fertility treatment. When combined with a balanced and nutritious diet, exercise can help you to maintain a healthy body weight. Do not overdo exercise. It is recommended to try low impact aerobic workouts like walking, swimming, and cycling.

HOW TO SPOT EARLY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY

When does pregnancy actually occur? Fertilization of the egg typically occurs on or around Day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle. About four days later, the fertilized egg then moves into the uterus to implant and develop.

There are a few common symptoms that let you know that you are pregnant.

1) Missed period - If you have a regular 28/29 day cycle, then being late or missing a period is a pretty good sign that you may be pregnant.
2) Nausea or morning sickness - can occur not just in the morning but also all day long. It can be as severe as throwing up just about all day and night or it can be much less severe
3) Frequent urination - the desire to pee frequently is a pretty good sign of pregnancy and can start very early.
4) Sore Breasts - Increase in breast size, soreness and the darkening of the nipple area.
5) Fatigue - it takes a lot of energy to grow a baby inside your womb, so you may feel really tired during pregnancy.
6) Mood Swings and raging hormones - the sudden changes in hormone activity as your body adjusts to its new pregnant state can cause emotionality and mood swings.
7) Spotting - A woman may spot (lightly bleed) 9-10 days after fertilization. It is not a normal period and it is perfectly normal. However, it should not go on for days. If you do bleed at all during pregnancy see your doctor.
